We all want top organic search results, but the fact is most companies just do not spend the necessary time on SEO to make the proper organic improvements. If you find yourself falling into this crowd here is a simple 15-day SEO guide that will help you get those organic improvements, and most importantly get you started.
The best part is you only need to spend an hour a day to get results!
Day 1: Defining SMART Goals
At the start of any project, you must first define your goals, and it’s no different for managing your SEO marketing. I find the S.M.A.R.T. (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Results-focused, and Timed) to be an effective method for any plan.
What content can we give away to get the best leads for our promotion?
How much do we need to sell and in what period of time?
How much traffic will we need to meet our sales goal?
Who is in charge of each goal?
Day 2: Confirming Goals Are Reachable
It may seem like this step should be part of defining your goals, but the truth is it usually takes some additional time to see if your goals are achievable. Often reviewing your goals and receiving input from your team will streamline them by adding or changing goals to be achievable by them. Remember the primary goal of any organization is to improve sales, and while reviewing your goals make sure this is your ultimate outcome.
Day 3: Defining Your Keywords
Defining your keywords is a critical step to your SEO success. Be sure you choose keywords that are focused for your audience and drive the traffic to your site that will ultimately increase your sales. Google’s Keyword Tool is excellent for finding new long tail versions of the keywords you are considering, and will verify that you are picking the right keywords from a popularity perspective. Your websites analytics tools may provide insight to keywords that you did not think of, so be sure to check it out. Also, find a tool that will monitor your keywords daily and show you your rankings.
This keyword position checker is a great free tool to monitor up to 1000 keywords for your site and review their positions in Google. You can see your results location all the way up to 500 pages deep in Google engine!
Day 4-5: On-Page SEO Audit
An On-Page SEO audit is certainly a foundation step in achieving SEO success with your website. Take the time to review your websites current on-page SEO and make sure you have addressed any technical issues as well as optimized the website or content for your keywords.
Here is a great free website SEO auditing tool we made to review the SEO of your website and print out a full report on some common technical issues to fix. Just enter in your website and submit for a the free report.
Day 6-8: Fixing On-Page SEO
Take some time to review your results from your SEO website audit and then put an action plan together to correct the things that need corrected. Follow the report and use the print out to go through the suggested fixes for any issues found.
Don’t forget that when you write your new content to make it on-page SEO friendly!
Day 9-11: Create Quality Content
The content of your website is the most important part of your promotional efforts. Creating impelling, useful and engaging topics will have an exceptional impact on the rest of your SEO efforts. Take some time to research trends in your business and look at what your audience is searching for.
Content promotion is one of the harder parts of the campaign. Finding the right areas to target your buyer’s persona will take some research and some testing before you get the right spots. Some easy ways to start finding good target markets are to join related groups in LinkedIn and Facebook. Be sure to find groups that match you buyers and not your competition. If you are an IT firm and send information to a group focused on IT Providers, you are targeting the wrong area. Find your clients groups and send to them! You can also use Google Search Operators to find targeted areas to promote your content. Using this method, you can target Google+ pages, hashtags, or even specific pricing from the Google search.
Another tactic is to simply see what your competition is linking to and go after the same targets. Tools like spyfu.com and semrush.com are excellent tools for this!
Day 13-14: Promoting Your Content
After you have found your target audiences, you need to put together a template for reaching out to these areas and promoting your content. The goal is to get your content shared and collect content information on potential leads for your business. This can get tricky as you do not want to sell, you simply want to offer the content you created in exchange for some information.
You need an email tracking and auto responding system for this to be the most effective. If you try to do all of this manually it will slow the process down, and you will lose leads. If you do not have an email management system GetResponse is an excellent option. (affiliate link enclosed)
Measure what is working and target your content promotion around this. Find related areas to promote to and add them to your funnel.
Setup a campaign that targets your audience at different times of the day to see what works best. Go back to Buzzsumo and find other similar information being shared and contact them as well.
Day 15: Repeating Regularly
Hopefully you are successful with your efforts and just need to repeat day 12 – 14. If so, try and locate additional traffic sources and promotional opportunities. If you were not that successful then do not worry! Go back and evaluate each step in the process and find out what needs improvement. Often the wrong keyword is picked, the content needs to be rewritten or in a better format. If you are sure you chose the right keywords and your content is solid, then check you targeted audiences and make sure you are in the right spots.
While this series is setup for an hour a day, someone who is new to the whole process will likely need to take more time and perhaps seek some outside assistance. The most important thing is to get started!
